On the 14/03/2008, Somneuk, a 3 year old elephant calf died at the Elephant XL Camp, Luang Prabang. Prior to his death Elephant XL Camp and ElefantAsia had observed and treated Somneuk for veterinary ailments. After his death, both Elephant XL and Elefant Asia held each other responsible. Elephant XL Camp attempted to sue ElefantAsia for damages relating to Somneuk’s death. Given a lack of conclusive diagnosis, the reason why Somneuck died remained unknown. On the 8/01/2010 it was mutually decided to dismiss with the claim. Elephant XL Camp (now Elephant Village) and ElefantAsia continue to support each other’s efforts in helping endangered Asian elephants in the Lao PDR.
