Maternity leave for elephants

Saturday 20 February 2010, by Ingrid Suter

In this case it’s not the elephants with the economic woes, but their owners. With an elephant’s gestation period being a jumbo 22 months, followed by at least another 2 years of lactation, it’s no wonder elephant owners are reluctant to breed their female elephants. Four years without an income is a very long time!

ElefantAsia has undertaken intensive consultations with elephant owners to understand how both elephant owners and elephants can reach a happy compromise. And the Baby Bonus scheme was born!

With a generous donation from the Luxembourg Government, ElefantAsia has 10 mechanical tractors ready to donate to elephant owners who allow their elephants to get pregnant. These tractors will give owners an alternative form of income while their elephant rests up and rears her calf, instead of working in the intensive and dangerous logging industry. Elephant owners will also gain financial insurance and compensation just in case problems arise during the calves’ birth. Participating elephants will receive free veterinary treatment during and after birth, as well as a safe place to undertake soft ecotourism once the calf is old enough to follow mum on a short elephant trek.

ElefantAsia already has one female elephant participating in the Baby Bonus scheme, Mae KhamDee, from the Hongsa District. Mae KhamDee has already had two calves, and her chances of becoming pregnant again are high.

If you would like to support elephant owners and ElefantAsia please donate to our Baby Bonus program.
