Villagers detain elephant calves ( India )

mercredi 3 octobre 2007

Two elephant calves were detained by the residents of Chikk hejanaru and Mudaganur villages in protest against the forest department officials not responding to their grievances of elephants straying into their villages and damaging farm land.

Officials of Forest Department here told UNI that when a herd of elephants were crossing the villages last evening, the locals tried to chase them into the forest.

Two calves got trapped in the paddy field and the villagers fettered it. On learning of it, the forest officials asked the villagers to immediately release the pachyderms.

They initially refused, but later relented after the officials gave an assurance that they would take action. September 24 2007
